The new Tetris features a complete re-design with all new gameplay modes. In one-touch marathon mode, as pieces drop you are given a set of places to put it, and with a single tap, the piece goes where you want. There is no twisting, rotating, or waiting.
In the fast-action Galaxy mode, players are given power ups and encouraged to complete challenges in the new Tetris log. EA has also added social features, with leaderboards, as part of the “T-Club” and the “Tetris Rank,” which also advertises bonus lines and “T-Coins.” It costs an extra $2.99 per month to join the T-Club. That’s right, a $2.99 monthly charge to play Tetris.
That’s not all. Owners who had the previous version of Tetris are not entitled to a free download of the new game. Luckily, the iPhone version only costs $0.99, but that might not be true of the upcoming iPad version. While I enjoy Tetris, it is unreasonable to pay twice, and equally unreasonable to pay $2.99 per month to access all of the features. Still, if you’re a die hard Tetris fan, you will want to take a look at the new version.
Tetris for the iPhone is currently available for download in the App Store, and the iPad version is coming soon, according to EA.
