Why buy modified games for the iPad?

With the iPad designed to allow you to play games straight from your iPhone app library, why would you want to purchase the same games re brought out for iPad? Read on to find out…Game played on iPad
The iPad comes standard with a nine and a half inch wide screen whilst flaunting a 1 GHz Apple A4 (chip) cpu and flash memory of 16, 32, or 64 GB. From a purely gaming view point, this brings a World of opportunity for game devs to dive into.
Canabalt’s Adam ‘Atomic’ Saltsman is particularly excited about the whole concept and new capabilites of the iPad, commenting very optimistically on the “big multitouch space”. This opens up the market for the more average gamer, by interceding the fat finger, tiny screen situation.
Republic of Fun president Mike Rasmussen is more exited about the “additional resolution and horsepower of the device”.  Interested to start “understanding the 3D performance of the A4 [chip].”  Speaking purely from a gaming viewpoint, this is brilliant news as we can now start to expect some modifications to their gaming apps, in order to utilise the new brilliant gaming capabilities of the iPad.
Apple chose EA Video games, the no 1 worldwide publisher for mobile games and Gameloft to present two of their modified iPad games at the iPad launch.

Travis Boatman for EA Video Games presented their modified version of Need For Speed Shift. They have modified the iPhone game to suit the new components of the iPad. They wanted to focus on the performance of the iPad game and were particularly impressed with the 3D graphics, as well as it being “like a hd television” held right to your face.  With the game play being so fast, the iPad’s light weight frame makes it easy to manouver and makes the gameplay a lot more smooth. This can only really be taken advantage of fully, when the games operates from the iPad’s engine, rather than the iPhone games’ old engine.

Gameloft presented their FPS N.O.V.A at the iPad games launch. Gameloft focused mainly on the multiple touch feature, developing a “mulitple target acquisition”, which allows you to shoot multiple targets at the same time. The improved graphics and smooth gameplay allows for a much better performance on the iPad game that the iPhone games will not be able to utilise.

So apart from the new improved features; wider screen, incredibly fast CPU, upto 64GHZ flash memory and 3d compatability, there really isn’t much point in buying the new games. Oh and also if you don’t like to be at the cutting edge of the gaming industry’s newest technology, then the new iPad games aren’t for you.

A Possible Glimpse of Gaming On The iPad

Okay, this isn’t the iPad, it’s the iTable created by PQLabs. It’s a big screen with multi-touch support and this chap right here is playing Warcraft 3. I’m not a huge fan of Warcraft but I know most people take a liking to these Strategy type games. Nonetheless the game looks absolutely fantastic played on the multitouch screen. At some points he is kind of pounding the screen with his fist, I’m not sure if the iPad can take that kind of abuse though. Either way, the dramatic music makes me anticipate the iPad even more.

Looks interesting – I wonder if we’ll see improvements to games like Assassins Creed, additions to the market like W.O.W and more Strategy and role playing games hitting the market now they can be more enjoyable on the iPads bigger screen.

A phone without an Accelerometer now is just not a phone. Nowadays it’s a must have and most future touchscreen smart phones with an eye for gaming and landscape texting will definitely need to have one installed. With new products come a whole new line of accessories and the iPad is no different. The iDrift is pretty much a steering wheel attachment to the iPad which allows you to play racing games a bit more realistically..Don’t get too carried away though.
It could be useful but you’d only find the hardcore gamers using this. I’m quite happy just tilting my iPhone. What do you think about the iTable? Could the iPad compete gaming wise? Would you use the iDrift?

iPadGuitar

The  Misa Digital Guitar is most unlike any other ‘electronic guitar’ we have seen, being designed not to replace your electric guitar, but to think of it as a totally different instrument.
Although its form is that of a standard electric axe, the Misa instrument is played in a different way. Your left hand is used to select notes, but the right hand does alot more than pluck strings. In truth, there aren’t any strings to pluck.
“In electronic music, the colour of the sound can be changed in an infinite number of ways,” explains Misa Digital. “For a guitar to accommodate this, the right hand needs more control than just plucking strings. You need to be able to control elements of the sound, such as sustain, pitch, filter cutoff, contour or any other synthesizer parameter, in a way that has no physical constraints.”
“This was [the] thought process when designing the Misa Digital Guitar. There are no strings on this instrument. The right hand doesn’t pluck strings, it controls sound.”
When playing the Misa Digital Guitar, your right hand is used to operate the touchscreen. No sound is generated internally – this is a MIDI controller and is used to send MIDI messages to your mac or sound module.

Profits, layoffs, new studios, and iPad games for THQ

THQ recently reported that they have returned to profitability after a difficult year. In addition, they will be opening new studios dedicated to digital development for consoles as well as Apple's iPad. Unfortunately, THQ will also be laying off some employees as part of the process.
Returning to profitability
The good news (for investors) is that THQ's profits for Q3 2010 are in line with expectations. For the nine months that ended December 31, 2009, THQ reported net income of $1.4 million, or $0.02 per share, compared with a net loss of $334.2 million, or $5.01 per share, in the prior-year period.
On a non-GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles) basis, the company reported net income of $8.3 million, or $0.12 per share, compared with a net loss of $65.4 million, or $0.98 per share, in the same period a year ago.
We are pleased to report solid profitability in the third quarter and we are on track to achieve all of our fiscal 2010 financial targets that we announced at the beginning of the fiscal year. This marks a significant turnaround for THQ in just one year and underscores the success of our focused strategy and reduced cost structure.
--THQ President and CEO Brian Farrell.
Game releases and licenses
THQ also confirmed Warhammer 40,000 Dawn of War II: Chaos Rising for the PC for a (fiscal) Q4 2010 launch. (The fiscal Q4 ends September 2010.)
THQ also announced that they have entered a new agreement with WWE to develop WWE-based games. In addition, THQ has acquired exclusive worldwide rights to develop and publish games based on Dreamworks animation films, including Kung Fu Panda: The Kaboom of DoomPuss in Boots, and the animated TV show The Penguins of Madagascar.
Lawsuits settled
In December 2009, THQ, World Wrestling Entertainment and JAKKS Pacific, Inc. reached settlement agreements regarding the WWE video game license and the termination of the THQ/JAKKS Pacific LLC joint venture. As a result, THQ reported a one-time settlement of $29.5 million, which is included in the venture partner expense line in its GAAP financial results for the fiscal 2010 third quarter ending December 31, 2009.
New Studios opening
In addition to returning to profitability, THQ will be opening two new studios dedicated to digital distribution and online games. THQ has 'refocused' its Juice Games and Rainbow Studios development studios toward the creation of games for digital distribution for consoles, as well as the recently announced Apple iPad.
The studios will now be called THQ Digital Studios Warrington and THQ Digital Studios Phoenix, respectively.

THQ anticipates the first games from THQ Digital Studios Warrington and Phoenix to be released in fiscal 2011. The games are in development for all major digital platforms, including Xbox LIVE® Arcade, PlayStation® Network, iPhone and iPad.
Layoffs pending
Unfortunately, as part of 'refocusing' its studios, THQ will also be laying off approximately 60 people.
